OH YES IT IS. OH NO IT’S SNOT.

Michael picking his nose

Back in the day, before they were giving out grants for confirming global warming, scientist used to get grants for all kinds of even sillier shit, like nose picking. Medical literature is a delightfully rich source of information on the subject.

Picking a winner at Ascot

A survey in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 1995 of 100 adults in Dane County, Wisconsin, concluded that the activity "is an almost universal practice in adults." The study identified one individual who spent more than 2 hours a day digitally excavating their nasal cavities

You can’t pick your family, but you can pick your friends

The same publication in June 2001 carried another survey, this time of adolescents in India, which found that the average frequency of pickage was four times a day.

Picking which way to go next

Perhaps more worryingly, Dutch researchers reporting in the August 2006 edition of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology found that the frequency of nose picking correlated with the presence of nasal Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium carried by about 25 per cent of people which can cause "flesh-eating" infections.

Nose pickers should not feel isolated or guilty about the activity

The DaVinci pick, is it a clue?

Alas I have not been able to find any studies into the effects of eating bogeys, but it is almost certain that there is an Nobel prize set aside for anyone who is willing to tackle this important medical subject.

FILMS WE LIKE TO WATCH ON BANK HOLIDAYS: #3 THE OMEN.

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man; and his number is 666."- The book of revelations 13:18

This is Papyrus 115 found in Oxyrhynchus Egypt, which is supposed to be the earliest known fragment from the Book of Revelation. Where you see the red arrow pointing is the number of the beast. It’s not 666, but 616.

Other early copies of the book agree. 616 is the number of the beast. Even pucker doodle experts agree it is 616....and not a lot of people know that, now you do. Anyway, back to the film:

If you want to poop yourself for Christmas, Damian will do it for you. The theme of “The Omen” comes from the Christian end of time prophecies in the Biblical “Book of Revelations.”

This film has withstood the test of time, usually shown as part of a trilogy. It is as scary today, as when it first came out. A supernatural thriller with an outstanding cast of both, humans and animals, a fascinating story and probably the scariest soundtrack of any film ever made. It sounds like a satanic choir singing a demonic chant in Latin which gets more manic as the piece goes on, building suspense to a crescendo

“So what are they singing?” I hear you say. OK, the bit that goes la la la la- la la la la- la la la -la-la-la-la, has the words; "We drink the blood, we eat the flesh, raise the body of Satan." With bits of "Hail, Satan!" and "Hail, Antichrist" thrown in. Strange choice of lyrics for the theme tune of "The X Factor" TV show, which also uses the song.

Talking of Antichrist, most people believe that Revelations tells us all about him, that is, people who haven’t read it, which is heavy going. The truth is that there is not one single mention of any Antichrist anywhere in Revelations

Ok, hands up, how many of you spotted the fact that although the films were set in real time, Damien went from 0 - 35 years in only 5 years between 1976 and 1981 and no one noticed or said a word.

The film and the crew are cursed apparently. In 2005 The Curse of The Omen” a documentary, was shown on British TV. It described the following incidents:

Two months before filming started, Gregory Peck’s son blew his brains out. Peck’s plane to the UK was hit by lightening and just to prove that lightening really does strike twice, the plane of executive producer Mace Neufeld was hit by lightening a few weeks later.

On the first day of filming a crew member wrote off a company car in an accident

Two weeks after filming, the expert who had the job to coach the cast on how to interact with the animals was dragged into a lions enclosure by his head and eaten alive by the lions.

The Doberman dogs in the cemetery scene turned on their trainers and attacked them.

The film’s director, Richard Donner, became trapped between two vehicles, following an accident when he was getting out of a car. Miraculously, he was not injured.

The hotel Neufeld and his wife was staying in was bombed by the IRA

A restaurant that was booked for the cast to eat at was bombed by the IRA

The brother of one of the cast died while he was filming the movie. Before he died the brother was in a card game in which he had three sixes.

Donner and his crew planned to charter an airplane. The hire company needed the plane that day for some Japanese businessmen and offered Donner a discount if they waited an extra day or two. Donner agreed. The airplane that they would have been on had engine trouble and crashed on to a road, hitting three cars, killing everyone. Even more ironic was the fact that the pilot’s wife and two children perished in the second vehicle.

Whilst working on “A Bridge Too Far” stuntman Alf Joint injured himself and was hospitalised. His job was to jump from a building on to an airbag, quite normal for a stunt man, however, he went over before everything was set up. He later said that he felt like he had been pushed.

On FRIDAY 13TH 1976 John Richardson the special effects consultant, who was responsible for the various horrific deaths in the film, including the decapitation scene, was also working on “A Bridge Too Far.” He was driving through Holland, with his assistant, Liz Moore, when they became involved in a head on collision. Richardson was unharmed, but his passenger was sliced in half in a manner similar to the decapitation in the film. Even more chilling was the road sign at the scene advising motorists that it was 66.6KM to Ommen!

As for poor old Damian, this was as good as it got, he never got to act again, except for one appearance as a reporter in the remake in 2006.

The curse continues to this day where the remake in 2006 was so bad that it may have doomed the acting careers of the entire cast.
